Game 26 White – Black, NY State Scholastic Championships, February 23, 2002.

This is a nice game by Black, using the Sicilian Dragon to good effect. 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.d4 cxd4 5.Nxd4 g6 6.Bb5+ Bd7 7.Bg5 Bg7 8.Bxd7+ Nbxd7 9.0-0 0-0 10.Qd2 Qb6 11.b3? White weakens the long diagonal, which is critical in the Dragon. 11.Nb3 is much better defense. 11...Rac8

Black increases the pressure. [11...Nxe4 12.Nxe4 Qxd4 13.Qxd4 Bxd4 wins a pawn, as 14.Rad1 Bg7 15.Bxe7? Rfe8 skewers the white pieces.] 12.Nd5? Nxd5 13.exd5 Bxd4 white blunders a piece. 14.Rae1 then an exchange. 14...Bc3 15.Qc1 Bxe1 16.Rxe1 Nf6 17.Qb2 Ng4 18.Re2 Rc5 19.h3 another error. 19.c4 is better. Rxd5 20.Qc1 f6 21.Bd2 Ne5 22.Bh6 Rf7 23.c4 Rc5 24.Re3 [24.Be3 wins back an exchange, though after ...d5 Black remains a piece ahead with a good position.] 24...d5 25.Rg3 dxc4 26.Qb1 Rd5 27.h4 Nd3 28.Kh2? White needs to guard the f2 pawn with Be3. 28...a5 [Black could immediately go for the king by 28...Qxf2 29.Be3 Qe2 30.bxc4 Rh5] 29.h5 [29.Be3 is still required.] 29...Rxh5+ 30.Rh3 Rxh3+ 31.Kxh3 Nxf2+ 32.Kh4 Qd4+ [32...Qd6 aims for ...Qh2 mate. 33.Qg1 g5+ 34.Kh5 Qg3 with unstoppable mate threats.] 33.Kg3 g5 Black creates a mating net!! 34.bxc4 Qf4#
