1.d4 c5 2.e3 White can gain space in the center by 2.d5. White's move is safe, and the play resembles a Queens Gambit where the c1 bishop stays home. Nf6 3.c4 d5 4.Nf3 Bf5 [4...cxd4 5.exd4 Nc6 transposes to a Panov-Botvinnik Caro-Kan, where the white knight is on f3 too early. Another good possibility is 4...e6, with a symmetrical position, Tarrasch Defense.] 5.Nc3 [5.cxd5 Nxd5 6.dxc5 seems harmless, as Qa5+ 7.Bd2 Qxc5 regains the pawn. Here White's tactic 8.e4! Nb4 (8...Bxe4 9.Qa4+ forks Black's king and bishop, the point of the tactic) 9.Qa4+ N8c6 10.Bxb4 Qxb4+ 11.Qxb4 Nxb4 12.exf5 Nc2+ 13.Kd2 Nxa1 14.Bb5+ Kd8 15.Nc3 favors White. ] 5...e6 6.dxc5 [6.Qb3 Qb6 7.Qxb6 axb6 slightly favors White, but the game move is also good.] 6...Nc6? Black fails to recapture the c5 pawn, and White keeps it! 7.cxd5 Nxd5 8.Nxd5 Qxd5 9.Qxd5 exd5 10.Nd4 Bg6 11.Nxc6 11.Bb5 is even stronger, attacking, pinning and developing at the same time. bxc6 12.b4 a5 13.Bd2 axb4 14.Bxb4 Ra4 15.a3 |

White hangs onto his extra pawn. 15...Be7 16.Be2 0-0 17.0-0 Bf6 18.Ra2 Re8 19.Bg4 [White should play 19.Rd2 unpinning his rook.] 19...Ra7 |

| [19...Re4! wins piece because of pin on a file. 20.Bd7 (20.Bd1 Rexb4 21.Bxa4 Rxa4 Black has two strong bishops which should overpower the white rook.) Rexb4 21.Bxc6 Ra5 22.axb4 Rxa2 23.Bxd5 with three pawns for the bishop, White can still put up a good fight.] 20.a4 [20.Rd2 breaks the pin.] 20...Rb7 [20...Re4 again wins a piece.] 21.Bd2 Rb2 22.Rxb2 Bxb2 23.Bd7 Re4 [ Another try goes 23...Rd8 24.Bxc6 Ba3 25.Ba5 Rc8 26.Bb5 (26.Bxd5 Rxc5 another fork!) 26...Bxc5 Black wins back one pawn, but white keeps a big advantage after Rd1 or Rc1.] 24.Bxc6 Rc4 25.Bxd5 Rxc5 26.e4 White sets up to push the passed a pawn. 26...Rc2 27.Be3 Rc7 [27...Bc3 slows White's advance. Then 28.Rc1 Rxc1 29.Bxc1 forces a favorable rook exchange, and white can bring out his king to aid in pawn promotion.] 28.Rb1 Ba3 29.a5 h6 30.a6 Kh7 [30...Bc5 31.Bxc5 Rxc5 32.Ra1 or 32.a7 leaves White winning.] 31.a7 Rc8 32.a8Q [32.Rb8 and Black cannot prevent the pawn from queening even with a sacrifice.] 32...Rxa8 33.Bxa8 f5 34.exf5 Bxf5 35.Rb3 Great job of using extra passed rook pawn to win the game! |
