1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 Nc6 Black blocks his c pawn in the Queens Gambit, which limits his chances for counterplay. See the games with Tuhrim and Reyes for further examples of this theme. 5.Nf3 Bb4 6.Ne5 An aggressive move with few pieces developed. 6.e3 is safer play. 0-0 7.e3 h6 8.Bh4 Bxc3+ 9.bxc3 Nb8 Black realizes his mistake and retreats his knight. Now White is up a couple tempi. 10.Bd3 Nbd7 11.c5!? White gains space, but relaxes pressure on the d5 pawn, allowing a later ...e5 counter. c6 12.0-0 Qa5 13.Nxd7 Nxd7 14.Qc2 White should consider 14.c4, playing a second pawn to c4. This makes ...e5 less attractive, and prepares to open lines for the bishops. e5 15.Be7 Stronger is 15.e4; this bishop move drives Black's rook to a better square. 15...Re8 16.Bd6 Nf6? Black blunders a pawn. 17.Bxe5 Ne4 18.c4 b5 19.cxb6 [White had a stronger capture 19.cxd5 cxd5 20.Bxe4 dxe4 21.Qxe4 Be6 22.d5 and white is up two passed pawns.] 19...axb6 20.f3 Ng5 21.h4 Ne6 22.f4 Nf8 23.Rf3 |

White lifts his rook to bring another piece to the kingside attack. Black reacts poorly. 23...Ng6? Black can afford 23...f6, ejecting the bishop on e5 before any more white pieces come closer to his king. Instead he gives up a pawn and paves the way for White's queen. 24.Bxg6 fxg6 25.Qxg6 Mate threatened on g7. 25...Re7 26.Rg3 Raa7 27.Bf6 Loss of time, which Black could later exploit. Rf7 28.Be5 Bf5 29.Qxh6 Qc3 30.Rf1 Kf8 ? Black should take the chance to exchange queens by 30...Qxe3+ 31.Rxe3 gxh6, exploiting the overworked rook on g3. 31.Qd6+ White has many winning lines, but start with the most threatening checks. In this case, 31.Bxg7+ Rxg7 32.Qh8+ Ke7 33.Rxg7+ is very strong. 31...Ke8 32.Qxc6+ 32.Qb8+ Ke7 33.Qxa7+ is quicker. 32...Kf8 33.Qd6+ Rae7 34.Qd8+ Re8 35.Bd6+
Good job! White puts together a good sequence of checks and breaks through the defenses. 35...Rfe7 36.Bxe7+ Kf7 37.Qxd5+ Be6 38.Qh5+ Kxe7 39.Rxg7+ Kd8 40.Qg5+ Kc8 41.f5 Bd7 42.Rb1 Kc7 43.Qf4+ Kd8 44.Rxb6 44.Qb8+ Bc8 45.Qc7# 44...Qxc4 45.Rb8+ Bc8 46.Qd6# |
