The Kan Variation of the Sicilian, is known for its great defensive
flexibility - Black refuses to commit himself. After 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 e6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 a6, Black remains confident that White cannot completely take over the center with 5 c4 due to the tricky 5 ... Nf6 6 Nc3 Bb4, and
meanwhile, Black may or may not play ... Nb8-c6 - he may fianchetto the queen's bishop instead, and after 5 Bd3, even the move 5 ... g6 is possible, switching directions to exert pressure against d4. |
